The majority of the collection concerns the settlement of Sydnor's estate by Sydnor's son-in-law, William Truehart of Hanover County, Virginia, who served as executor. Some of the papers concern Sydnor's slaves and their medical treatment; others concern debts owed to and by Sydnor. Papers also include a land survey, estate inventories, and a letter concerning apple trees

Biographical or historical data
William Sydnor was born on 27 April 1752 in Northumberland County, Virginia, to Anthony Sydnor (1710/1-1779) and Elizabeth Taylor Sydnor (1721/2-1785). He moved to Dinwiddie County, Virginia, then to Lunenburg County, Virginia. By 1800, he owned a prosperous farm in Nottoway County, Virginia. He married first Sarah Garland (1752-1789) 4 March 1778, and they had two daughters. He married second Elizabeth Cocke Cross (1741-1815). His daughter Elizabeth Taylor Sydnor married William Truehart of Hanover County, Virginia. Sydnor died 4 August 1819.
