Summary
  • Vestry book, 18 October 1749-20 April 1761. Also available on Misc. reel 649. For transcriptions see, VESTRY BOOK OF ELIZABETH RIVER PARISH, 1749-1761, by Alice G. Walter, 1969. (Accession 21899)
  • Birth records, 1726-1728, 1756, 1758-1761. These records are transcribed in VESTRY BOOK OF ELIZABETH RIVER PARISH, 1749-1761, by Alice G. Walter, 1969. (Accession 21900)
  • Christ Church vestry book, 30 December 1828-7 April 1905. In addition to vestry minutes, early records also note annual meetings of pew holders, often listing those present. In later years these meetings became congregational meetings. The minutes of the Civil War years reveal the impoverished condition of the members and the difficulties experienced in maintaining the church during that period. (Accession 28025; Misc. reel 473)

Biographical or historical data
Elizabeth River Parish was formed in 1636 from Elizabeth City Parish, when Elizabeth City County was divided and all that part on the south side of the James River was cut off to form New Norfolk County. The next year New Norfolk County became extinct when its territory was divided into Upper Norfolk and Lower Norfolk counties. In 1691 Lower Norfolk County was divided into Princess Anne and Norfolk counties (Upper Norfolk having become Nansemond County in 1646). For the period indicated in the vestry book cited below, Elizabeth River Parish was limited to Norfolk County. For an interesting history of the parish, see ST. PAUL'S CHURCH, 1832, ORIGINALLY THE BOROUGH CHURCH, 1739, ELIZABETH RIVER PARISH, NORFOLK, VIRGINIA, published by the Altar Guild of St. Paul's Church, Norfolk, Virginia, 1934, compiled by Mrs. Calvert R. Dey. For many marriage, birth, and death records of Elizabeth River Parish, ca. 1794, see PAPERS OF THE FRENCH CONSULATE ESTABLISHED AT NORFOLK 1784-1831 (Accession 29115, Reel 3, Part 2, of six reels).
