Biographical or historical data
John Dinwiddie was born about 1695 in Glasgow, Scotland. A major, Dinwiddie was the brother of Robert Dinwiddie (1692-1770) lieutenant governor of Virginia from 1751 to 1758. Dinwiddie lived in King George County, Virginia, and served as the county's first sheriff in 1721. He married Simplia Rosa Ann Field Mason (d. 1761), daughter of George Mason, and they had two daughters. Dinwiddie died in Glasgow by 29 June 1726 when his will was probated. His brother Laurence Dinwiddie, a merchant in Glasgow, died in Glasgow 1 November 1736. His wife Christian Crawford Dinwiddie served as his executrix.
