William Edward Wiatt was born 31 July 1826 in Gloucester County, Virginia, to William Graham Wiatt and Louisa Stubbs Wiatt. He attended Newington School in Gloucester County and Fleetwood Academy in King and Queen County, Virginia. Wiatt began teaching at Fleetwood, and also was licensed by the Olivet Baptist Church to preach in 1847. Wiatt took a teaching job in Lowndes County, Alabama, and while there, was ordained a Baptist minister in April 1854. He left Lowndes County in 1856 and returned to Gloucester County where he served as preacher at two churches. When the Civil War began, Wiatt enlisted and served as chaplain of the 26th Virginia Infantry during the war. After the war ended, Wiatt returned to serving Baptist congregations in Gloucester County. Wiatt remained as a minister in Gloucester County until his retirement in 1910, except for a year and a half stint as State Missionary in the Mountains of Virginia. Wiatt married first Catherine Rebecca Spencer (d. 1849) 19 December 1849, and they had two children, one of whom died in infancy. He married second Charlotte Laura Coleman (d. 1864) 29 September 1852, and they had three children. Wiatt married third Nannie B. Heywood (1839-1911) 18 July 1871, and they had four children. Wiatt died in Richmond, Virginia, 14 February 1918, and was buried in Newington Cemetery in Gloucester County.
