Biographical or historical data
George MacLaren Brydon was born 27 June 1875 in Danville, Virginia, to Robert Brydon (1845-1921) and Ellen Page Dame Brydon (1849-1890). He attended Danville public schools. In 1893, he entered Roanoke College and graduated in 1896. Graduating from the Virginia Theological Seminary in 1899, Brydon was ordained a deacon in the Episcopal Church and served in Randolph parish in Halifax County, Virginia. After his ordination as a priest in 1900, Brydon was assigned to Emmanuel Church in Baltimore, Maryland. In 1901, he became rector of the churches in Loudoun County, Virginia, and returned to Emmanuel in 1904. In 1907 he served at Trinity Church in Morgantown, West Virginia, and in 1911 became rector of the churches in King George County, Virginia. Brydon became the Episcopal Church's executive secretary of Diocesan Missionary Society and moved to Richmond, Virginia. In 1919, he became the Diocese's treasurer and in 1920, its secretery and treasurer of church schools. In 1922 he became registrar of the Diocese and in 1925 its historiographer. Brydon became the leading historian of the Episcopal Church in Virginia by the time of his death. Brydon married Nathalie Page Coleman (1878-1961) of Halifax County, Virginia, 5 September 1901, and they had four children. Brydon died in Richmond 26 September 1963 and was buried in Forest Lawn Cemetery.
