Biographical or historical data
Born 1871 in King and Queen County, Virginia, John Garland Pollard grew up in Church Hill in Richmond, Virginia. He attended Richmond College and received his law degree from Columbian College (now George Washington University) in Washington, D.C. in 1893. He returned to Richmond and began practicing law with his uncle. He was elected Attorney General in 1913. In 1917. he was defeated in the Democratic gubernatorial primary. Pollard resigned in January 1918 to volunteer with the YMCA in Europe during World War I. In 1921, he accepted a position as professor of constitutional law and history at William & Mary. Originally an anti-organization progressive Democrat, Pollard became allied with Harry F. Byrd, Sr., the boss of the Democratic organization, in the late 1920's. In 1929, he was elected governor with organization support. At the end of his term, he became the chairman of the Board of Veterans Appeals. He died on 28 April 1937.
