Biographical or historical data
Martha Frances Woodroof Hiden was born in 1883 in Orange County, Virginia, to Jesse Alphonso Woodroof (1846-1915) and Susan Graves Woodroof (1852-1956). She graduated from Randolph-Macon Women's College and did graduate study at the University of Chicago. A member of the Virginia chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Hiden was an authority on Virginia colonial history and genealogy. She served as a member of the Virginia State Library Board from 1932 to 1952, on the executive committee of the Virginia Historical Society from 1950 to 1959, and on the Board of Visitors of the College of William and Mary from 1952 to 1959. She served as chairman of the Newport News Public Libraries from 1927 to 1952 and as chairman emeritus until her death. Hiden was also the chairman of the committee for the preservation of records for the Virginia D.A.R. She also wrote and edited several articles and books on Virginia history and genealogy. After her husband's death, Hiden owned and operated the Hiden Storage and Forwarding Company. She married first, Thomas William Mundy (b. ca. 1879) of Bedford County, Virginia, 24 May 1904. After a divorce, she married Philip Wallace Hiden (1872-1936) of Newport News, Virginia, and they had 5 children. Martha Woodroof Hiden died 28 February 1959 in Newport News and was buried in Lynchburg, Virginia.
