Crawford (1821-1901) of Louisville, Kentucky, to his sister Mary Gamble Crawford (1823-1897) of Brownsburg, Rockbridge County, Virginia, and one to his father, Robert G. Crawford (b. ca. 1792). Crawford's detailed letters describe his duties working for a local wholesaler and teaching Sunday school; news of recent deaths, including a young man shot in a street fight, 1846; his impressions of several young women; the story of a local Seminole who had converted to Christianity, become a preacher, and opened a school for Native American children; Crawford's own desire to be a good Christian; various illnesses, including a bout with typhoid fever, 1850; financial difficulties; friction between a local Presbyterian Church's members and choir director; various social encounters; and lingering homesickness

Robert Irvine Crawford was born on 12 October 1821 to Robert G. (1791-1852) and Nancy Gamble Irvine Crawford (1802-1837) of Rockbridge County, Virginia. The family would grow to include siblings Alexander (b. ca. 1822), Mary Gamble (1823-1897. She married James H. Logan in 1854 and they settled in Randolph County, Virginia), Sarah A. (b. ca. 1826), Agnes (b. ca. 1828), Caroline (b. ca. 1833), and Frances (b. ca. 1836). The younger Robert attended Washington College (now Washington and Lee University) in Lexington, Virginia, then moved to Louisville, Kentucky, in 1846 to work for a local wholesaler. He stayed there for the rest of his life, working as a merchant and bookkeeper. He married Margaret Ann Craig (1825-1892) and had with her at least five children, including daughter Carrie (b. ca. 1855), and sons George (b. ca. 1856), Alexander (b. ca. 1858), Newton (b. ca. 1860), and Brown, also called "Hugh" (b. ca. 1861). Robert I. Crawford died on 29 October 1901.
