Biographical or historical data
The Sixth Mount Zion Baptist Church was organized on 3 September 1867 by Reverend John Jasper in a Confederate horse stable on Brown's Island. This structure soon proved too small and throughout 1868, the congregation held services in various places. In the summer of 1869, the church moved to a small brick building on the corner of St. John and Duval Streets. The core of the present church building was built in 1887. It was remodeled and extended in 1925.
