Letters, 1839-1856, of the Ball family of Arkansas, Texas, Illinois, and Kentucky consisting mainly of correspondence from Ann Ball and Bennett Ball (d. 1849) of Conway County, Arkansas; Matilda Ball Wilborn of Conway County, Arkansas; William Ball of Conway County and Bullitt County, Kentucky; and John S. Ball of Pike County, Illinois; to their sister Lucinda Robinson (later Smith) of Washington and Crawford Counties, Arkansas, and Austin, Clarksville, and Williamson County, Texas. Letters mainly concern family and personal matters, discussing health; deaths of relatives, spouses, and children; conditions of the areas the writers live in; and expressing a desire to see each other again. Letters include comments on the agriculture of the various sections of the country each person lives in. John S. Ball states that he is a doctor in Pike County and also mentions the Jennings estate in England in which members of the Ball family might have an interest

Biographical or historical data
The Ball family descended from the Ball family of Virginia. Members had emigrated to Arkansas where they settled. Bennett, John, Lucinda, Matilda, and William were siblings. Bennett Ball and his wife Ann lived in Conway County, Arkansas, before moving to Kentucky. After Bennett Ball's death in 1849, Ann Ball returned to Arkansas. John Ball became a physician in Pike County, Illinois. Lucinda Ball married a man named Robinson and they lived in Washington and Crawford Counties, Arkansas, before moving to Texas, where Mr. Robinson died. Lucinda Ball Robinson then married a man named Smith. They lived in Williamson County, Texas. Matilda Ball lived in Conway County, Arkansas, and married Elijah Wilborn (d. 1856). William Ball lived in both Conway County, Arkansas, and Bullitt County, Kentucky, before settling in Kentucky.
