Biographical or historical data
Overton Hart Steger was born 28 October 1840 in Cumberland County, Virginia, to Francis F. Steger (1795-1856) and Barbara Cosby Steger (b. 1801). Overton H. Steger enlisted in Company D, 21st Virginia Infantry 1 July 1861. He served throughout the war until captured at Winchester, Virginia, 19 September 1864. He was imprisoned at Point Lookout, Maryland, until exchanged 15 March 1865. Steger returned to Cumberland County, where he became a farmer. By the 1880s, he had moved to Wright County, Missouri. Steger married Mildred C. Austin (1842-1885) 8 August 1866 and they had five children. Steger died in September 1942 and was buried in the Old Mountain Grove/Swedish Cemetery.
