Biographical or historical data
Samuel Edwin West was born 20 July 1838 in Surry County, Virginia, to William Major West (1806-1866) and Lucy Caroline Warren West (1817-1873). Before the Civil War began, West was a deputy sheriff in Surry County. When the war began, he enlisted in Company E, 5th Virginia Cavalry 20 April 1861. He was discharged from the army 30 May 1862, the reason being he was a deputy sheriff. He reenlisted in Company G, 13th Virginia Cavalry. West married Oceana Winifred Gwaltney (1840-1877) 27 January 1859. He died 15 December 1879 in Surry County.
