Biographical or historical data
Samuel Harris was born 24 December 1806 in Bedford County, Virginia, to William and Mary Pollard Harris. He joined the Baptist church in 1831, and decided to become a minister. In 1834 Harris entered Richmond Seminary, now the University of Richmond. After his graduation, Harris was ordained 26 February 1838 at the Second Baptist Church of Richmond, Virginia. His first church was Winn's, near Richmond, but he eventually settled in Louisa County, Virginia and became an active minister in the Goshen Association, which consisted of churches in all or parts of Spotsylvania, Louisa, Caroline, Hanover, Goochland, and Orange Counties. Harris retired from the active ministry in 1888, and became a member of the Baptist Church in South Anna, Louisa County. Harris married Mary Ann Harris (ca. 1820-1891) 15 December 1841; they were husband and wife for 50 years. Samuel Harris died 28 March 1891, followed by Mary Ann Harris two days later, 30 March 1891.
