Biographical or historical data
William Gordon McCabe was born 4 August 1841 in Richmond, Virginia, to John Collins McCabe (1810-1875) and Eliza Sophia Gordon Taylor McCabe. He graduated from Hampton Academy in 1858 and entered the University of Virginia in 1860. When the Civil War began, McCabe left the university and entered military service as a private in the 3rd company of the Richmond Howitzers, an artillery company. Serving throughout the war, McCabe rose to the rank of captain. After the Civil War, McCabe opened the University School in Petersburg, Virginia, in October 1865. He operated his school there for 30 years before moving it to Richmond, where he closed it in 1901. McCabe achieved fame as a scholar, author, poet, translator, and editor. He declined the offers of professorships from several universities. He married first Jane Pleasants Harrison Osborne (1840-1912) 12 April 1867, and they had 3 children. He married second Gilleria "Gillie" Armistead Cary (d. 1953) 16 March 1915. McCabe died 1 June 1920, and is buried in Blandford Cemetery in Petersburg.
