Summary
  • Vestry book, 24 November 1758-29 November 1782. A list of ministers, 1761-1850, precedes the vestry minutes which are entered consistently to the final date. Some processioners' records, 1759-1763, also appear. Register, 1820, 1868-1875, includes the obituary of the Reverend Samuel McCroskey, who served 1774-1803, baptisms, funerals, marriages - all between 1868-1871, accounts, list of communicants (n.d.), and selected births and deaths, 1721-1790. Later records appear in Register, 1836-1895. These records are also located on Northampton County reel 66. (Accession 23606)
  • Vestry book, 22 February 1812-8 December 1937. List of rectors, 1761-1850, is on page i. Copy of the will of Stephen Carlton, 1654, is on page ii. The records to 1852 were probably kept by Dr. W.G. Smith, long time clerk. Of particular interest are the accounts of the vestry in its unsuccessful effort to retain the glebe lands devised to the parish, as residuary legatee, by the will of Stephen Carlton. Although the struggle did not begin until 1835 when the Overseers of the Poor acted to take over the lands and divide them into three plantations to be sold, the vestry entered suit, which continued until March 1859, when as recorded in the minutes an adverse decision was handed down by the Virginia Court of Appeals. Accession 30102 is the manuscript copy of this volume. Also available on Misc. reel 361. (Accession 24265)
  • Register, 1836-1895, including families, baptisms, confirmations, communicants, marriages, funerals, and removals, also accounts, naming the various funds for which money was collected and expended. Accession 30104 is the manuscript copy of this volume. (Accession 29956a; Misc. reel 361)
  • Treasurer's book, 1847-1871, containing a record of the receipts and disbursements of the vestry. There is an incomplete index at the beginning of the book. Accession 30103 is the manuscript copy of this volume. (Accession 29956b; Misc. reel 361)
  • Register, 1893-1904, including list of rectors, 1861-1904, baptisms, confirmations, marriages, funerals, and communicants listed for each church in the parish. This is an interim parish register. Accession 30105 is the manuscript copy of this volume. (Accession 29956c; Misc. reel 361)
  • Register, 1904-1959, of Christ Church (Eastville, Va.) and Hungars Church (Bridgetown, Va.) including a history of Hungars Parish, a list of rectors, families, baptisms, confirmations, communicants, marriages, and burials. Includes index. (Accession 34591; Misc. reel 1144)
  • Transcript of records, 1660-1662, consisting of baptisms and marriages. Includes index. These records have been published in the WILLIAM AND MARY QUARTERLY, series 1, 18 (1909/10): 178-181; series 1, 22 (1913/14): 39-43. (Accession 32825)

Biographical or historical data
Accawmack County originally included all of the Eastern Shore of Virginia. In 1643 Northampton County was established by an act changing the name of Accawmack County to Northampton County. In 1663 Northampton County was divided into two counties; the name Northampton County was retained by the lower county, while the name Accomack County was restored to the upper county. Two parishes, Upper and Lower, had been established in 1643 within the bounds of Northampton County. In 1691 the two were merged into one parish to be called Hungars Parish, to cover the entire county of Northampton.
