Company G, 1st Virginia Cavalry enlisted at Amelia Court House, Amelia County, Virginia. The company was known as the Amelia Light Dragoons at the time of its enlistment and was under the command of Captain Samuel S. Weisiger (1823-1885). The company joined other cavalry units under J.E.B. Stuart (1833-1864). Weisiger resigned 18 July 1861 and the company elected Charles Robert Irving (1835-1914) captain 21 July 1861. When the cavalry was reorganized under Stuart in the Fall of 1861, the Light Dragoons became Company G, 1st Virginia Cavalry. The company and the regiment served with the Army of Northern Virginia in most of the major battles throughout the Civil War. Many of the soldiers in Company G surrendered with the army at Appomattox, others escaped and made their way toward Lynchburg, Virginia, before finally surrendering, ending their service in the Confederate army.
