Biographical or historical data
During and after the Civil War, the Northern Methodists went South to perform missionary work with the black freedmen and fulfill preaching duties in areas vacated by Southern Methodist preachers during the approach of Northern armies. By 1869, the Northern Methodists had created ten new conferences, one of which was the Virginia Conference, established in 1867. Abingdon District of the Methodist Episcopal Church was established in 1867 and initially reported to the Holston Conference, but for only one year. It was included in the Virginia Conference in 1868.
