Biographical or historical data
Robert Morris (1734-1806), was a prominent merchant, signer of the Declaration of Independence, and known as the "financier of the American Revolution." He served as a member of the Continental Congress, superintendent of finance for Congress, 1781-1784, helped establish the Bank of North America, and was a U.S. Senator from Pennsylvania, 1789-1795. He was heavily involved in western land speculation, which did not profit due to the economic effects of the Napoleonic wars in Europe. Morris was in debtors prison 1798-1801 and never recovered his fortune.
