Biographical or historical data
Joseph William Chinn was born on 16 November 1798 at "Epping Forest" near Nuttsville, Lanacaster County, Virginia. He graduated from Union College in Schenectady, New York in 1819, and later studied law. He was admitted to the bar in 1821 and practiced in Lancaster County. Chinn was a member of the Virginia House of Delegates (1826-1828) and State Senate (1829-1831), and was then elected to the United States House of Representatives and served from 1831-1835. He died at his estate "Wilna" in Richmond County, Virginia on 5 December 1840 and is buried there.
