Biographical or historical data
Linn Banks was born 23 January 1784 in Culpeper County, Virginia, to Adam Banks (1742-1816) and Gracey James Banks (1749-1831). He attended the College of William and Mary, graduating in 1806. After reading law, Banks was admitted to the bar in Madison County, Virginia, in 1808. Commissioned a captain in the Virginia Militia, Banks rose to the rank of colonel. He was elected to the House of Delegates in 1812, and was elected speaker of the house in 1817. Banks served in that position until 1838, at which time he was elected the United States House of Representatives. Banks served two terms in Congress, and was defeated for his third term in 1841 under unusual circumstances. Banks married Eliza J. H. Sanders (d. 1859) of Raleigh, North Carolina, 4 April 1811, and they had no children. Banks drowned in the Conway River in Madison County 13 January 1842, and was buried at his home, "Vale Evergreen," in Madison County.
