Biographical or historical data
Francis Everod Rives was born 14 January 1792 in Prince George County, Virginia. During the War of 1812, he served as an ensign in the 62nd regiment, 8th battalion, 4th division of the Virginia militia. He later studied and then practiced law in Petersburg, Virginia. Rives represented Prince George County in the House of Delegates from 1821 to 1831, and then represented Prince George, Isle of Wight, Southampton, Surry, and Sussex Counties, Virginia, in the Virginia Senate from 1831 to 1836. Rives was elected to the United States Congress and served from 1837 to 1841. Later, he represented Amelia, Powhatan, Chesterfield Counties, Virginia, and Petersburg in the Virginia Senate from 1848 to 1851. Rives died 26 December 1861 at his home "Littleton" in Sussex County, and was buried at Blandford Cemetery in Petersburg.
