Biographical or historical data
Watkins Moorman Abbitt was born in Lynchburg, Virginia, 21 May 1908. He graduated from Appomattox Agricultural High School in Appomattox, Virginia, in 1925.; Abbitt received his LL.B. from the University of Richmond in Richmond, Virginia, in 1931. Abbitt was a lawyer and a bank executive. He served as Commonwealth attorney of Appomattox County from 1932 to 1948. He was a member of the Virginia Constitutional Convention in 1945 and a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in 1964. Abbitt was elected as a Democrat to the Eightieth Congress in a special election to fill the vacancy caused by the death of United States Representative Patrick H. Drewry, and reelected to the twelve succeeding Congresses (17 February 1948-3 January 1973). He was not a candidate for reelection to the Ninety-third Congress in 1972 Abbitt died 13 July 1998, in Lynchburg and was interred in Liberty Cemetery in Appomattox.
