Bound typescript of the autobiography, 1849, of Thomas Rutherfoord (1766-1852), a prominent merchant in Richmond, and the father of John Rutherfoord (1792-1866), governor of Virginia, detailing his life in Scotland and in Richmond, Virginia. Two pages of genealogical data on his descendants follow his account of his upbringing, business ventures, and family. There are also twelve loose handwritten pages of extracts from the autobiography made by an unidentified individual

Biographical or historical data
Thomas Rutherfoord was born in Glasgow, Scotland, on 9 January 1766 to Thomas Rutherfoord (1720-1770) and Janet Meldrum Rutherfoord. He attended the College of Glasgow. Rutherfoord emigrated to Virginia in the 1780s, settling in Richmond, Virginia, where he became a merchant. He married Sarah Winston (ca. 1769-1839) 21 August 1790 and they had thirteen children. Rutherfoord died in Richmond 31 January 1852, and was buried in Shockoe Cemetery.
