This accession consists of a prisoner of war questionnaire from the Bureau of Military Record, State of New York, dated 1865. The questionnaire was filled out by John J. Sherman of the 8th New York Heavy Artillery, Company G, who was held prisoner in Libby Prison and Belle Island, Richmond, Virginia, and Salisbury prison, North Carolina from 1864 August until 1865 February. Sherman answers questions and includes a personal narrative about his imprisonment and treatment by the Confederate army

Biographical or historical data
John J. Sherman served with the 8th New York Heavy Artillery, Company G. He was captured 25 August 1864 at Reams Station, Virginia, and was taken to Libby Prison and Belle Isle in Richmond, Virginia, and then sent to prion in Salisbury, North Carolina, for four months.
