Biographical or historical data
Alonzo H. Sterrett was born 12 June 1841 in Erie County, Pennsylvania. When the Civil War began, he crossed into Ohio and enlisted as a sergeant in Company E, 29th Ohio Infantry and served with the regiment until 22 November 1864, when he transferred to the 40th Regiment, U.S. Colored Troops. After the war, Sterrett became a teacher and settled in Tama County, Iowa. He later became a superintendent and loan agent. By 1900, Sterrett was living in Poweshiek County, Iowa. He and his wife Amelia H. Sterrett (1841-1918) had six children. Sterrett died in Poweshiek County 17 July 1901, and was buried in Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell, Iowa.
