Biographical or historical data
John Mitchell Mason was born 19 March 1770 in New York, New York, John Mason (d. 1792) and Catharine Van Wyck Mason. He graduated from Columbia College in 1789 and received his theological training from his father and at the University of Edinburg, from where he graduated in 1792. He was appointed to succeed his father at the Scotch Presbyterian Church in New York that same year. He was licensed to preach 18 October 1792 and ordained in April 1793. Mason established the forerunner to Union Theological Seminary in New York in 1804, serving as its first professor. In 1806 he established THE CHRISTIAN'S MAGAZINE and wrote many of its articles. He resigned from the Scotch Presbyterian Church in 1810 and established the Murray Street Church. Mason served as a trustee of Columbia College from 1795 to 1824, and was provost from 1811 to 1816. Ill health forced Mason to resign from all his positions except for Columbia in 1821. Hoping that a change of location might help his health, he accepted the presidency of Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. However, failing to regain his health, he resigned and returned to New York in 1825. Mason was a prolific author and was considered an outstanding speaker. He married Ann Lefferts (d. 1822) 13 May 1793, and they had seven children. Mason died 26 December 1829.
