Papers, 1884-1917, of John Wilson Stephenson (1850-1921) of Bath County, Virginia, consisting of postcards and receipts. Most of the postcards concern the collection of debts and fees, as well as the settlement of suits Stephenson was involved in as an attorney. Correspondents included Uriah Bird; M. L. Haviland; the Snow, Church Company; R. G. Dun and Company; the National Collection Company; the Lyon Furniture Agency; and R. S. Oglesby Company, Inc. Papers also include a postcard from THE LADIES' HOME JOURNAL to Eliza Gatewood Warwick Stephenson informing her that her subscription will begin February 1900 and a receipt from the Rockbridge Alum Springs, Longdale and Lexington Telephone Company to Stephenson for the payment of rent on a telephone for 1900

Biographical or historical data
John Wilson Stephenson was born 24 July 1850 in Highland County, Virginia, to Adam Stephenson (1811-1889) and Sarah Charlotte Wilson Stephenson (1814-1894). He attended schools in Highland County, then attended Roanoke College, from where he graduated in 1872. Stephenson graduated from the University of Virginia law school in 1874. That same year, he began practicing law in Bath County, Virginia. From 1887 to 1903, Stephenson served as Commonwealth's Attorney for Bath County. He represented the district composed of Bath, Highland and Rockbridge Counties, and the city of Buena Vista in the Virginia House of Delegates from 1910 to 1920. Stephenson and his wife Eliza Gatewood Warwick Stephenson (b. 1857) had five children. Stephenson died in Bath County 10 September 1921.
