Biographical or historical data
Benjamin Lyons Farinholt was born in Yorktown, Virginia, in 1838 at his family home "Waterview." He enlisted as a lieutenant in Company E, 53rd Virginia, known as the "Pamunkey Rifles." Farinholt was later promoted to captain. He served in Armistead's brigade, Pickett's division at Gettysburg. Wounded on Cemetery Ridge, he was taken prisoner and sent to Johnson's Island prison camp. He escaped on 22 February 1864, after which he was promoted to colonel. He became a businessman after the war and died in West Point, Virginia, 24 December 1919.
