Biographical or historical data
Rogers Clark Ballard was born 6 November 1858 in Louisville, Kentucky, to Andrew Jackson Ballard (1815-1885) and Frances Ann Thruston Ballard (1826-1896). He legally changed his name to Rogers Clark Ballard Thruston at the request of his mother in 1884. Thruston attended Hopkins Grammar School in New Haven, Connecticut; Welliston Seminary in East Hampton, Massachusetts; and Yale University from where he graduated in 1880. He retired from a successful career as a geologist and engineer in 1919 to devote his life to genealogy and Kentucky history. That year, he gave an endowment to the Filson Historical Society in Louisville on condition that they find a permanent home with a fire proof room to house its collections. Thruston became the savior of an institution on the verge of failure. He retrieved several of the Filson's collections mistakenly sold to the University of Chicago and then stored them at his office while no permanent home existed. Thruston became president of the Filson Historical Society in 1923 and moved the Filson into a permanent home. Thruston gathered several collections and genealogical information for the society. He wrote several histories of Kentucky. Thruston died 30 Decmeber 1946 in Louisville, Kentucky.
