Biographical or historical data
Julius Adolph de Lagnel was born 24 July 1827 near Newark, New Jersey. He was commissioned a 2nd lieutenant of artillery in the army in 1847 and promoted to 1st lieutenant in 1849. In 1861, he resigned his commission and entered the service of the Confederate army. In July 1861, De Lagnel defended Rich Mountain against superior Union forces. He was badly wounded when overwhelmed by Union forces, but hid and recovered from his wounds at a local citizen's home. De Lagnel was captured when he tried to cross back into Confederate lines, but was later exchanged. He received a commission as a brigadier general 15 April 1862, but declined the promotion. He accepted a position in the ordnance bureau with the rank of lieutenant colonel, and held this post until the end of the Civil War. After the war, he worked in the Pacific steamship service. De Lagnel died 3 June 1912 in Washington D.C., and was buried in Alexandria, Virginia.
