Biographical or historical data
Edward Eggleston was born in Vevay, Indiana, on 10 December 1837 to Joseph Cary Eggleston (d. 1846) and Mary Jane Craig Eggleston. He attended schools in Indiana. In 1857, he became a Methodist preacher, living in Minnesota. In 1866, he moved to Illinois, where he became a journalist. Eggleston began writing in 1871, beginning a career as a novelist and historian. He married Lizzie Snider in 1858. Eggleston moved to New York in 1881, and died there on 2 September 1902.
