Diary, 1850-1887, of Horatio Ross Riddle (1811-1904) of Tennessee, Pennsylvania, New York, and Charlestown, West Virginia, consisting mainly of entries dealing with personal and business matters. Entries from 17 January 1850 to 20 November 1852 deal with Riddle's involvement in a coal mine and sawmill in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Entries from 19 February 1853 to 7 May 1855 deal with Riddle's personal life, farm, and business in Meadville, Pennsylvania. Entries from 7 May 1855 to 12 June 1857 cover business and personal matters while living in Niagara, New York. Entries from 4 June 1859 to 26 March 1862 and from 4 June 1886 to 29 December 1887 deal with Riddle's personal, farm, and business matters while living in Charles Town, West Virginia. The entries for 1861-1862 contain information about events in Jefferson County during the Civil War and also reports of battles through out the South. Biographical or historical data
Horatio Ross Riddle was born in July 1811 in Pennsylvania. From 1850 to 1852, he was involved in a coal mining and sawmill operation in Chattanooga, Tennessee. In 1853, he settled in Meadville, near Erie, Pennsylvania, where he operated a farm. Riddle moved to Niagara, New York, in 1855, becoming a merchant. By 1859, he resided in Charles Town, West Virginia, where again he owned a farm and conducted business. He was listed as an insurance agent in the 1860 census. He married Sarah Huston (1821-1905) and they had four children: Mary (b. ca. 1852), Rebecca (1853-1857), Katherine W. (1855-1940), and Anna Stuart (1856-1945). Riddle died in Charles Town in 1904, and was buried at Zion Episcopal Church.
