Biographical or historical data
St. James-Southam Parish (or Southam Parish) was established in 1744 when St. James Parish was divided into two parishes separated by the James River. The lower portion became St. James-Southam Parish and fell into the new county of Cumberland which was established in 1749. When Powhatan County was established in 1777 all of St. James-Southam Parish was located in the new county. The parish continued to be active until 1791. With disestablishment, the parish activity ceased, until 1827 when interest revived. There were two churches within the parish -- Emmanuel and Grace -- and information on both is found in this record. In 1912, by action of the Council of the Diocese of Southern Virginia, St. James-Southam Parish was combined with Littleton Parish. These two merged with Genito Parish, the three becoming one parish having the name Genito. With this action, Littleton and Southam parishes were disbanded.
