Biographical or historical data
Leander Cunningham was born about 1835 in Adams County, Pennsylvania, to James Cunningham (b. ca. 1788) and Elizabeth Cunningham (b. ca. 1792). A surveyor before the war, he served as a substitute in Company S, 165th Pennsylvania Regiment which was mustered in in November 1862. He was quartermaster sergeant. The company served in Suffolk, Virginia, in 1863, and was mustered out of service 28 July 1863 in Adams County.
