Biographical or historical data
Samuel Walter Howerton was born on 13 June 1834 in Halifax County, Virginia and educated at Richmond College. He taught school and was justice of the peace in Thomasville, Davidson County, North Carolina. On 10 April 1863, Howerton was appointed Chaplain of the 15th North Carolina Infantry Regiment, C.S.A. In 1882, he moved to Roanoke, Virginia and served as justice of the peace from 1888 to 1894. In April 1900, he was appointed a member of the Confederate Pension Board and in July 1900, the Police Justice. He died on 22 July 1900 before he could assume the duties of his latter appointment. Howerton married three times and had six children.
