Biographical or historical data
William Robertson was born 5 February 1750 in Prince George County, Virginia, to Archibald Robertson (1715-1768) and Elizabeth Fitzgerald Robertson (d. 1773). Educated in Scotland, Robertson returned to Virginia and became a planter and merchant. He married Elizabeth Bolling (1758-1830) of Chesterfield County, Virginia 7 May 1775. Robertson moved his family to Richmond, Virginia, 24 January 1794 in order to become more active in law and public service. He was appointed clerk for the Council of State in 1811 and served until 1820 when he was appointed a councillor. He and his wife had 12 children, including Thomas Bolling Robertson (1778-1828) who served as congressman for, attorney general and governor of Louisiana; John Robertson (1787-1873) who served in the Virginia House of Delegates, attorney general of Virginia, and congressman from Virginia; and Wyndham Robertson (1803-1888) who served on the Council of State and as governor of Virginia. William Robertson died 18 November 1829.
