Sweet also discusses the battles of 2nd Manassas, Antietam, and Fredericksburg, as well as the Shenandoah Valley Campaign of 1862. Transcripts were made by Sweet's daughter Marion Sweet Johnston from his original letters and contain her comments

Olney Sweet was born in 1842 in Gibson, Susquehannah County, Pennsylvania. When the Civil War began, he enlisted in Battery F, 1st Pennsylvania Artillery and served until the end of the war. At some point after the Civil War, Sweet moved to Iowa.
