Papers, 1797-1925, collected by Henry Thompson Louthan of Caroline County and Richmond, Virginia, consisting of writs issued by the courts of Caroline County, accounts, receipts, promissory notes, bonds, subscriptions, roster of the 87th regiment, 14th brigade of the Virginia militia, and personal correspondence. Many of the documents are to and from Joseph M. Seay of Caroline County. The papers also include a letter from William A. Moncure (1803-1862), representing Caroline and Spotsylvania Counties in the Virginia Senate, on the 1853 session, and two letters from Harry F. Byrd (1887-1966) asking for Louthan's support for Byrd's gubernatorial run in 1925

Biographical or historical data
Henry Thompson Louthan was born 5 November 1866 in Rappahannock County, Virginia, to Carter McKim Louthan (1838-1913) and Mary Ella Brown Louthan (ca. 1839-1885). He attended Richmond College, the University of Virginia, Southern Baptist Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky, and the University of Chicago. After serving nine years as a Baptist preacher, Louthan taught history at the College of William and Mary from 1903 to 1910, then headed the history department at Mercer University in Macon, Georgia, from 1912-1914. He then served as principal at Edmund Pendleton High School in Caroline County, Virginia, from 1914 to 1918. From 1918 to his retirement in 1932, Louthan taught history at the Staunton Military Academy in Staunton, Virginia. Upon his retirement, Louthan moved to King and Queen County, Virginia, before moving to Richmond, Virginia, in 1951. He married Elizabeth Hurt (1873-1953) of Caroline County and they had at least two children. Henry Louthan died in Richmond 20 July 1953 and was buried in Hollywood Cemetery.
