Summary
Letters, 1837-1860, addressed to David Goff (1804-1878) of Beverly, Randolph County, (West) Virginia. The majority of the letters are written to him in his capacity as Commissioner of Delinquent and Forfeited Lands for Randolph County by individuals, and people acting on behalf of others, inquiring into the disposition of various tracts of land. In some cases, legal descriptions of the property are given, as well as title abstracts, acreage, location, and information on whether taxes had been paid. There are also letters from the Auditor of Public Accounts in Richmond concerning corrections to lists of delinquent and forfeited lands, and from the Virginia Land Office regarding requests for copies of patents, grants, and surveys. Also included in the collection are letters from the clerk of the General Court relating to abstracts of deeds recorded in that court. There are also letters written to Goff while he was serving in the Virginia House of Delegates covering other topics as well, including Whig politics, road, bridge, and railroad issues, and Western rights. Finally, some of the letters deal with other legal matters in which Goff was involved in as attorney, and there are also personal letters from his son Claudius Goff (b. 1832) while he was away at school in Clarksburg
