Summary
Papers, 1845-1891, of Stith Spratley (1825-1914) of Surry County, Virginia, including receipts and promissory notes. The receipts and promissory notes are principally for the purchase of merchandise by Spratley, but also include some Surry County property tax receipts dated 1866-1874. Also, there are some receipts concerning Spratley's in-laws, the Clarke's. Aside from receipts the collection also contains a deed, 1903, for a plot purchased in North Carolina by Lucy D. Spratley (b. 1877) and a plat, 1972, for land purchased in Surry County by Myer S. Reed (1913-1996)

Biographical or historical data
Stith Spratley was born 23 March 1825 to Jack and Martha Hart Spratley of Surry County, Virginia. He owned three farms, one in Blackwater district, Surry County of over 700 acres, and two on the James River of over 1000 acres each. At one time he also served as a magistrate and deputy sheriff of Surry County. He married Urania Clarke (1827-1904) of Surry County on 16 Nov. 1847 and together they had 9 children. Stith Spratley died 5 March 1914.
