Transcript of a letter, dated 11 September 1781, from Governor Thomas Nelson, Jr., (1738-1789) in Williamsburg, Virginia, to Lieutenant Governor David Jameson (d. 1793) in Richmond, Virginia, concerning the lack of provisions for troops and the need for supplies to be sent immediately. Nelson notes that there is no flour, meal, or beef for the Virginia militia who have given their flour to French troops, and worries for the corn crops in the area. The original of this letter is apparently not extant. There are two copies of the letter, one a negative photostat, the other a positive photostat

Biographical or historical data
Thomas Nelson, Jr., was born 26 December 1738 in York County, Virginia, to William Nelson (1711-1772) and Elizabeth Burwell Nelson (b. 1719). He was sent to England for his education in 1753, and studied at Cambridge. Nelson returned to Virginia in 1761 and represented York County in the House of Burgesses from 1761 to 1775 and in the five Virginia Conventions. He represented Virginia in the Continental Congress in 1775-1777 and signed the Declaration of Independence. Nelson returned to Virginia and represented York County in the House of Delegates from 1777 to 1783, and from 1786 to 1788. He was a general in the Virginia militia and commanded the militia from 1777 to 1781. He was elected governor in June 1781 and resigned due to health in November 1781. Nelson married Lucy Grymes (1743-1830) 29 July 1762, and they had thirteen children. Nelson died at his Hanover County, Virginia, plantation Montair 4 January 1789.
