Letterbook, 1828-1835, of C. de la Pena of Williamsburg and Richmond, Virginia, consisting of letters, 1828-1829, written in Spanish, from Pena to Pedro J. Rodriguez of Norfolk, Virginia, in which Pena discusses Williamsburg, the College of William and Mary, and other news. Also includes letters, n.d., to Dabney Brown concerning the college library; to Philip Dougherty of Richmond regarding a young woman; and to James P. Preston (1774-1843) of Richmond declining a position as tutor to Preston's children, but requesting Preston's aid in acquiring the position of organist at Monumental Church in Richmond, Virginia. Volume also includes a personal account by an unidentified writer concerning Congressman Warren R. Davis (1793-1835) of South Carolina whom the author took into his home while Davis was ill in Richmond and contains Davis' comments on John C. Calhoun (1782-1850), George McDuffie (1790-1851), and politics. Volume also includes an unfinished essay entitled "Thoughts on raising and training Race Horses." This essay is at the end of the volume

C. de la Pena was a Spanish emigre who settled in Williamsburg, Virginia. He was hired in 1827 to teach French, Spanish, Italian, and Latin at the grammar school located at the College of William and Mary, and he had proposed opening a music school. In 1828 the College hired him as professor of modern languages, a position he held two years before resigning.
