Letter, 9 July 1804, written by Wilson Cary Nicholas (1761-1820) in Warren, Albemarle County, Virginia to Samuel Smith (1752-1839) of Baltimore. Nicholas thanks Smith for all he has done for him, including while they served together in Congress, and writes about the nomination of George Clinton (1739-1812) as vice-president, and the appointment of John Armstrong, Jr. (1758-1843) as minister to France. Nicholas also writes about his apprehensions concerning his new position as collector of customs in Norfolk

Biographical or historical data
Wilson Cary Nicholas was born in Williamsburg, Virginia on 31 January 1761. He attended The College of William and Mary, and later served in the Revolutionary Army and commanded George Washington's Life Guard until it disbanded in 1783. Nicholas was a member of the Virginia House of Delegates 1784-1789 and 1794-1800, and was a delegate to the State Constitutional Convention which ratified the Federal Constitution in 1788. He was elected as a Democratic Republican to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Henry Tazewell and served from 5 December 1799 until 22 May 22 1804, when he resigned to become collector of the port of Norfolk 1804-1807. He was then elected to the Tenth and Eleventh Congresses and served from 4 March 1807, until his resignation on 27 November 1809. He served as Governor of Virginia from 1814-1817. Nicholas died at "Tufton," near Charlottesville, on 10 October 1820, and was buried in the Jefferson burying ground at "Monticello," near Charlottesville.
