Biographical or historical data
Sarah J. Smith (ca. 1812-1866) of Nansemond County, Virginia, was the widow of Robert R. Smith, a prosperous Nansemond County planter who died by 1850. They had three sons. Washington C. Smith (1841-1865) served in the 5th Virginia Cavalry as a lieutenant for a year during the Civil War, before declining his reelection as an officer. Henning Edward Smith (ca. 1843-1913) served in the 5th Virginia and the 13th Virginia Cavalry units during the Civil War. After the war, he was a farmer and served as the treasurer of Nansemond County. Robert R. Smith (b. ca. 1846) also served in the 5th Virginia and 13th Virginia Cavalry. After the war, he also was a prosperous farmer in Nansemond County. Sarah J. Smith married John Richard Elliott (ca. 1820-ca. 1860), a physician in Nansemond County, 31 January 1857.
