Biographical or historical data
Richard Bland Lee was born at "Leesylvania," in Prince William County, Virginia on 20 January 1761. He is the brother of Henry "Lighthorse Harry" Lee, the father of Robert E. Lee. He attended the College of William and Mary and served in the Virginia House of Delegates from 1784-1788, 1796, 1799-1806. He was also elected to the First, Second, and Third Congresses (1789-1795) of the United States House of Representatives. He was defeated for reelected to the Fourth Congress in 1794. In 1816, President James Madison appointed Lee commissioner to adjudicate claims arising out of the loss or destruction of property during the War of 1812. In 1819, President James Monroe appointed Lee judge of the Orphans' Court of the District of Columbia, a position he held until his death in Washington, D.C., on 12 March 1827. He was buried at his home near Chantilly, Virginia.
