Summary
  • Vestry book, 3 November 1743-10 February 1793. Processioners' returns and vestry minutes are recorded consistently, but only one record of Overseers of the Poor appears. Efforts of the vestry to maintain the church after 1786 are noted among the later minutes. Accession 30121 is the manuscript copy of this volume. For a printed version see, THE VESTRY BOOK OF UPPER PARISH, NANSEMOND COUNTY, VIRGINIA, 1743-1793, edited by Wilmer L. Hall, 1949. (Accession 19763)
  • St. Paul's Church register, 1839-1940 (bulk 1839-1896), including a list of Clergy, 1843-1940; parishioners, 1843 and 1860 (showing residence and remarks); baptisms; confirmations; communicants; marriages; deaths; and church offerings. Records are lacking for the period 1862-1865. Though the title page of this volume indicates St. Paul's Church was located in Suffolk Parish, it is actually located in Upper Parish. (Accession 23593)

Biographical or historical data
Nansemond County, on the south side of the James River, was originally a part of Elizabeth City County. First designated Upper Norfolk County, the name was changed in 1646 to Nansemond County. Three parishes, South, East, and West, were created for Upper Norfolk County in 1643. In time the names by which these parishes were known changed: South Parish became Upper Parish; East Parish became Lower Parish; and West Parish became Chuckatuck Parish. In 1737, Chuckatuck Parish and Lower Parish were merged into one, Suffolk Parish. In 1744, Upper Parish was divided and a part thereof added to Suffolk Parish. After some boundary changes, north of the division line became the Lower Parish, generally known as (Lower) Suffolk, or Chuckatuck, Parish, and south of the line became Upper Parish, generally known as Upper (Suffolk) Parish.
