Biographical or historical data
James Zachariah McChesney (1843-1922) was born near Brownsburg, Rockbridge County, Virginia. He attended Virginia Military Institute 1862 January-July, then enlisted as a private in the 17th Battalion Virginia Cavalry. In 1863 he was transferred to the 14th Virginia Cavalry regiment and retired in March 1865. He was a farmer in Brownsburg, Virginia from 1865-1869 and moved to Charleston, West Virginia, where he was a merchant and life insurance agent. Died in Charleston 25 January 1922 and is buried in Spring Hill Cemetery.
