- John Price Kepner was born 18 October 1840 in Pittston, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, to Solomon Kepner and Eliza Ellis Kepner. While a child, he and his family moved to Chester County, Pennsylvania. Kepner attended Berks County, Pennsylvania schools, then attended Bryant and Stratton's Mercantile College. When the Civil War began, Kepner enlisted in the 6th Pennsylvania Cavalry 31 October 1861 and remustered into service 1 January 1864. Honorably discharged 2 September 1864, Kepner reenlisted as a hospital steward in the United States Army 3 September 1864 and served until honorably discharged 1 April 1867. He then accepted the position of chief clerk in the statistical subdivision of the Surgeon General's office in the War Department, where he worked until his death. He married Augusta T. Massey (1845-1888) of Baltimore, Maryland, and they had two children. Kepner died 13 September 1881.
