  • Papers, 1890-1978, of the Lynch family of Winchester, Virginia, including diaries, photographs, clippings, and genealogical notes. The bulk of the collection consists of thirty-five volumes of diaries of Theresa B. Lynch (1860-1933), containing daily handwritten notations concerning the activities of her and her husband Maurice M. Lynch (1854-1944), a prominent attorney, as well as their five children: Mary, Theresa, Vera, Maurice, Jr., and Harry. Other topics covered in the diaries include weather observations, births, marriages, and deaths in the community, recreational activities, household activities and goods purchased, religious services attended, travels, local Democratic politics, as well as national events. There are also four volumes of diaries of Harry H. Lynch, covering the years 1910 and 1915-1917, as well as household expense books, 1935-1940, and 1955-1978

Biographical or historical data
The Lynch family were prominent residents of Winchester, Virginia. Maurice M. Lynch was born in Frederick County, Virginia on 14 May 1854. He studied law at the University of Virginia, and was admitted to the bar in 1887. In 1888, he became Superintendent of Schools for Winchester and Frederick County. He was a member of the State Board of Education from 1907 to 1913, and was a member of the first Handley Board of Trustees, serving from 1896 until 1944. He married Theresa B. Ahern of Martinsburg, West Virginia on 19 April 1887. She was born there on 21 January 1860. Theresa B. Lynch died in Winchester on 16 April 1933. Maurice M. Lynch died on 31 March 1944. They are both buried in Mt. Hebron Cemetery.
