John Fitzhugh May was born 22 July 1784 in Lunenburg County, Virginia, to George May (1756-1822) and Anna Fitzhugh May (1765-1805). He became a lawyer and a judge on the Virginia State Supreme Court. May also represented Petersburg in the House of Delegates from 1825 to 1829 and 1836 to 1841. May married Margaret Bothwick Feild (1787-1865) 18 October 1808 and they had 5 children. May died 21 July 1856, and was buried in Blandford Cemetery.
